About

It's the journey, not the destination, that matters. Even Dorothy knew that.

Brooke in Hong Kong, fall 2008, on her voyage around the world.
I'm Brooke. Dorothy Gale is my hero. And like Dorothy, I'm a small town Kansas gal who's been chasing her dreams over the rainbow, around the world, and back again. My high school yearbook said I was "most likely to see bright lights and big cities." Little did I know that I'd eventually live in five states and four countries (with more to come) and circumnavigate the globe on a ship. Now I advise the next generation (and anyone else really) on the college experience, international adventures, and generally living the life they imagine.

This blog was initially started as my "study abroad blog" to make sure my mom knew I was alive when I was interning in the United Kingdom during the summer of 2005. Now it's where I chronicle my adventures (or misadventures) in designing a life with intention.

I'm a study abroad enthusiast by day and a wannabe web designer/carpenter/lounge singer/yogi by night. When I'm not blogging, I'm usually rocking some red shoes, planning my next adventure, perfecting my tree pose, singing in the shower (until I form my own cover band), and scheming frugal ways to make my home beautiful (wherever that might be).

After moving around the world and enjoying several different jobs in international education, I'm frequently asked if I'll ever "settle down." I'm not sure what that means, but I know that if "settled down" means I won't travel, I'll stop learning, and I'm no longer thirsty for life, well then, the answer is no, I'll never settle down. Sometimes you just have to follow your own path. And if that means I'm respecting the breath that I've been given, that I'm happy where I am, and that I have people I love in my life...well, that sounds pretty settled to me.

Regardless, in my heart of hearts, all roads eventually lead to my family's little ranch back in Kansas. Because, after all, there's no place like home.
